Implant Dentistry Procedure and Outcomes FAQ

Dental Implants Ask The Dentist Jeffrey Hoos Question:
My dentist suggesting doing a flipper after extracting a tooth that has a cracked root. Can you explain me what a flipper is?

Answer:
When I was thinking about your question, I wondered where the name actually came from. The Flipper is usually an inexpensive way to replace a couple of teeth while an area can heal to get ready for the next step. When you have a cracked root, sometimes the area become infected or at least inflamed and an implant cannot be placed right away because the tissue needs to mature or heal.

They are made out of plastic and are not secured really by anything but the pressure against the other teeth. They can be made so that the tooth is the right color and shape. Oh the name flipper.......they can flip in and out easily. It is important to understand that this is a temporary measure until you can have an implant.
