Dental Face Lift - Reconstructive Implant Dentures
As people age, normal wear and tear on our natural teeth slowly but surely reduces the height of our normal bite. This is a normal phenomenon.... regardless of how well established our oral health habits are.
Many patients become candidates for modern denture dentistry out of choice and convenience. Some people however discover... after extractions have been completed... that they are unable, for whatever reason, to wear dentures comfortably.
This becomes a very frustrating and saddening event for many patients. Whether the aversion to wearing dentures is because of loose fit, allergic reactions to the denture material, difficulty in speaking, laughing or eating.... these folks become, for the lack of a more descriptive term... denture haters.
Curing Denture Hate
Hating to wear poor fitting or improperly designed dentures is nothing unusual. Some denture wearers eventually elect not to wear dentures .... and wrestle with the difficulties of being endentulous, or toothless.
Meet our patient here in the adjacent photo. She too hated dentures. She simply couldn't get used to wearing and upper plate. Early on, while in her 20's, an upper denture was made as treatment for a congential cleft palate condition.
Through the years of this preference to be toothless, our patient's bite collapsed (normal event) which has the unattractive result of making anyone appear older than their actual age. Other structural changes occur also which are not helpful for maintaining good oral health.
At the time our patient presented in our office, she was excited to learn that with today's advanced technologies and treatments, she could solve her problem with treatments that would give her the cure she always wanted - new teeth without having to take them out every night.
Implant Prosthodontics - Face Lift Dentistry
The patient hadn't worn dentures for many years... in fact for most of her life. As a result, she had a significant collapse of her vertical dimension, causing the mouth to close down too far. Left untreated it can cause jaw pain problems and eating difficulty.
We conducted an intensive study with the help of an articulator (device for assessing bite occlusal relationships) to recreate a normal bite for her. Digital imaging and computer aided design techniques, coupled with reconstructive dentistry components through 3I Innovations Dental Labs produced the solution of permanently implanting new teeth for the patient.
The ajacent closeup picture of her new upper teeth demonstrates an excellent occlusal relationship with her existing teeth and partial.
The patients upper jaw, as can be seen in the photo, now provides full support for her upper lip, enabling the normal lip movement when smiling. She shows off a very broad smile with lots of teeth showing.
Our patient was very very happy with the outcome. She has regained her normal bite, can eat just about anything she wants now, can smile and speak with confidence she hasn't had in years. Understandably... she has a lot to smile about.
To say the difference between the before and after picture is easy to see... is an understatement. The impact of change and improvement has gone way beyond just getting new teeth.
